South Africa has been dubbed a country “alive with possibilities”, a country where every person is respected as an individual, with rights and responsibilities. History has taught us that without youth development through education, we are putting our economic future in jeopardy; most importantly the lives of our youths are on the line.
Schools have become unsafe places for our learners, as they have become unruly resulting in a display of anger and violence. With the recent spate of violence around the country, initiatives to help curb the rising statistics of school violence are of a great need.
We have all heard the cliché “experience is the best teacher”, but the following statistics reflects that we cannot afford our learners the luxury of this experience:
· More than a third of offenders currently incarcerated in South African prisons are juveniles aged fourteen to twenty-one
· Between 85% and 94% of offenders will re-offend within two years of being released
These statistics confirms that prison is not the ideal place to rehabilitate a child and, therefore, our strategy is prevention rather than cure.
A safe and secure enviroment is a prerequisite for effective teaching and learning. Therefore in order to reduce acts of crime in schools and promote safer schools, Pillar to Post have designed and implemented various crime prevention programmes for schools, benifiting both learners and educators.
